Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is present as a dimer on the apical surface of thyroid follicular cells, and it is the primary enzyme involved in thyroid hormone synthesis.
TPO can be found in normal thyroid and thyroid carcinoma of papillary and follicular type, and it is a useful marker for the differentiation of benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms.
